Personal information

Any information that you post or add online will be there forever, for everyone to see unless you protect it. It is essential that you think before you post and to make sure your social network privacy settings are secure. You need to think about what should be private and what you can disclose on the internet.

Here are some top tips to protect your social networks:

1. Public or Private? Check your Social Network settings
Be aware on most online social networks your profile has a very limited amount of protection. Check what privacy settings you have. Do you know how to protect your accounts?

Public: Everyone can see
Closed / Private: People can only see if you want them to.

2. Blocking
Make sure that you only accept people you know as friends on the internet. Predators can pretend to be children so it essential that you are only friends with people you know.

3. Testing the settings
Make sure your settings are secure on any social network or chat room you use. Test your own social network site, can anyone view your profile?

Look at these guidelines to show you how to check your settings.

4. Taking control of tagging
Don't just accept the basic security on social network sites. Remember that people can take pictures and videos of you and link your name to them. This is called 'tagging' and you can disable this so people cannot tag you. It is also important to know that you have the right to ask someone to remove any photograph or video of you posted on someone else's profile.

5. Screening sensitive of information
When you write something online it is there for everyone to see. Make sure you do not add personal information online, post inappropriate images/video or inappropriate posts.
